Isle of Athelney
The low hill in the picture is of great significance in English History. It is closely associated with King Alfred and his wars against the Danish invaders in the 9th century. It was King Alfreds refuge after his first unsuccessful campaign against the Danes and the place where he left to start a series of campaigns which ultimately swept the Danes out of Wessex and subdued them across most of England
